Anglo American Drug Co., 1¢ black, large die proof (Scott RS1P1 and vars.), with plate no C.494 die-sunk on card and showing the transition from Jeremiah Curtis & Sons to Anglo American; slightly reduced to 8¼" x 6" card; attached to the margin of the card is a slightly faulty example of a 1¢ Curtis & Sons RS67 with paste-up "ANGLO AMERICAN/ DRUG COMPANY" over "JEREMIAH/ CURTIS & SON" in the left label; penciled "JEC [Jeremiah E. Curtis] 8//11/80" and red crayon "Aug 14th 1880"; a small final approval slip is pinned to the upper right corner of the proof with penciled "Appd 16/Aug 80 JHK" [John H. King, secretary, Anglo American Drug Co.]; both approvals are crossed out with green crayon and "5" written above the attached RS67 as well as on the right label of the stamp itself - purpose unknown; also included is a printed form letter dated July 12, 1880, that was sent by Jeremiah Curtis & Sons to its customers acknowledging the transfer of Curtis' Mrs. Winslow's Soothing Syrup to the Anglo American Drug Co. The proof has some toning and minor corner creases, but the whole is a marvelous and unique piece of Proprietary Medicine history. Estimate $1,000 - 1,500. (Image)
