image 1852, 3¢ dull red, type I, unofficial "Chicago" perf 12½ (Scott 11 var.), a magnificently centered example, tied by bold, full strike of "Chicago/APR/24/1857/Ill." postmark to blue cameo corner card cover to Indianapolis, the cover from E.S. Wells, who made and sold "Ladies' & Gents' Boots & Shoes, of all styles"; the stamp is flawless, the cover with backflap removed and several expertly repaired edge nicks or tears, Very Fine, ex Gross, Hackmey, LeBow & Keightley, with 1991 P.F. certificate.

Without question, one of the finest extant Chicago perf covers. Any such usage is rare, this cover especially so with the corner card advertisement.

image 1852, 3¢ dull red, type II, unofficial "Chicago" perf 12½ (Scott 11A var.), richly colored right margin stamp, perforations scissors-cut away at top but fully present on other three sides, tied to orange cover to West Killingly, Conn., by full strike of "Rosendale/JAN/31/Wis." c.d.s.; repaired tear to backflap of no consequence, Very Fine and very rare, ex Chase, Beals.

Discussed by Chase (p. 175) and Wilson Hulme (
Chronicle 175, p. 162). Chase surmises the stamp or cover was carried to Rosendale, 175 miles from Chicago, by a traveler.
