1869, 15¢ brown & blue, type II, center inverted (Scott 119b), an exquisite example with deep, strong colors perfectly registered, clear perforations all around, and a light star fancy cancel, Fine, a Top of the Pop, one of just four such-graded stamps in PSE's Population Report, ex Howard, with 2000 A.P.S., 2016 P.F. and 2019 P.S.E. certificates, the last graded F 70. SMQ F 70; $80,000.
An exceptionally rare stamp. Of the 100 used examples recorded, over half have serious flaws or repairs, leaving fewer than 20 sound (two of which are in institutional collections, the British Library's Tapling Collection and the New York Public Library's Miller Collection). PSE records only seven used stamps submitted for a grade, just five of which managed a 50 or higher. At least as difficult to find in sound condition as the more expensive 24¢ and 30¢ inverts. SMQ F 70 $80,000 Estimate $40,000-60,000 (Image)
1869, 24¢ green & violet, center inverted (Scott 120b), a remarkable rarity, fresh with clean colors, margins clear on three sides (just touching at bottom), and a light cork rosette cancel leaving the design clearly visible; tiny perforation tip tear at top left not mentioned on accompanying certificate, Fine, with 2009 P.S.E. certificate (prior P.F. certificate #438086 no longer accompanies).
Scott's value is for "fine centered examples with only minimal faults". Only 94 examples of the 24¢ invert are recorded in Siegel's Census: four unused, 83 used singles, a used pair, one on cover, and the unique block of four (this #120b-CAN-79). Scott $37,500 Estimate $25,000-35,000 (Image)
