image Tax Paid Revenue, American Bank Note Co., ca. 1931, 5(¢) Taj Mahal Cigarette Tax die essay, in "80 A Rose" on India, mounted on a 9" x 6" card with typed archival notations including "Cigarette Tax (Decalcomania Stamp)" and "Issued on Decalcomania paper" with an attached (stapled) list of specifications for "50/ Cigarette tax" and "100/ Cigarette tax", Very Fine. A unique essay for a cigarette tax stamp that was apparently never issued. This is one of seven designs included (in this color) in the 1931 A.B.N.Co. salesmen's Sample Book and also one of four designs in the company's salesmen's Color Chart Books from the same period. image 1847, 5¢ red brown (Scott 1), two covers, the first bearing a magnificently bright example (an early printing showing full detail in Franklin's fur collar), with three full margins, the bottom tight but clear of the frameline, tied by blue grid with blue Philadelphia postmark at right, on folded letter to Carlisle, Reading, Pa.; the second with a flawlessly margined example, cleanly printed, tied by manuscript cancel on folded letter sheet on cover to Maysville, Ky, with red Cincinnati O/APR/6/5 cts" postmark; first with central file fold and hinge remnants on reverse, but both sound and fresh, Very Fine, a lovely duo for the 1847 collector.
