image Italian States: Modena, 1853, 1L black, with period after value, value partially omitted (Scott 9 var), a large-margined example (dividing lines present on three sides) with excellent color and impression, tied on piece with straightline handstamped "1852" date, the stamp with a striking plate flaw whereby the bottom half of "LIRA 1" is omitted, Very Fine, a rare used stamp, the "normal" stamp cataloguing $2500 in Scott and €5000 on piece in Sassone.

image Italian States: Parma, Newspaper Tax, 1853, 9c black on blue (Scott PR2), an incredibly fresh mint, never hinged block of 4 on ordinary paper; the margins are extra wide at the sides, well clear at the bottom and barely touching at the top; the only negative is a light diagonal natural paper crease affecting the left stamps, otherwise Very Fine, with a 2012 J-F Brun certificate.
