Germany, Merchant U-Boat mail, 1917, fantastic collection related to WWI blockade runners; with Germany suffering under the weight of the Entente naval blockage, North German shipping company with Deutsche Bank, had a class of unarmed cargo U-boats built; scrapbook includes 5 covers from early 1917, they carry the U-boat cancel but also "Return/Because of termination of the submarine mail service to sender", two related postcards from Konigsberg; three envelopes postmarked Chicago 1931 autographed by Captain Paul Koenig, the Deutschland Commander; mint postcard of Captain Schwartzkoft, Commander of the ill-fated Bremen; 5 period postcards of Deutschland on summer 1916 voyage; two sepia 6" x 9" photographs of a sub with a 5" gun (perhaps Deutschland after retrofitting?); 17-page booklet (in German) about blockade runner mail; TLS Dec 1931 on North German Lloyd letterhead from Paul Koenig to a collector; to letters (in German) dated 1921 related to collecting insurance stamps from this period; very interesting 7" x 10" scrap book.
