Arab Teneriffe" and countersigned by the Commanding Troop Officer, franked with G.B. 1d violet perfin "UN/C" (Union Steamship Co. Ltd.), canceled by "Paid Liverpool Br. Packet" c.d.s. (Jan. 23); damaged on reverse from rough opening, otherwise Very Fine and an unusual example of soldier's concessionary rate mail, ex Gerald Sattin,

Written on board the "S.S. Arab", which was being used as a troop ship, by a member of the 2nd Battalion West Riding Regiment, which was stationed in South Africa at the time. This soldier's letter was posted from Teneriffe, where the ship called en route from Southampton (Dec. 1895) to Cape Town. It was then transferred to another Union Steamship Co. ship originating from West Africa and bound for Liverpool.
