1897 (Mar. 15) envelope from Kiungchow to Kowloon Customs, care of the Hong Kong Post Office, showing "Kiungchow Customs/Mail Matter" oval handstamp in black, matching "Customs/Kiungchow" double-ring origin datestamp, and bilingual "Paid" handstamp in brown, with "Hong Kong/B" arrival c.d.s. (3.20) on reverse, Fine to Very Fine and extremely rare. Estimate HK$ 70,000 - 90,000,
Only five covers are recorded with the Kiungchow Customs Mail Matter handstamp used in conjunction with the "Paid" bilingual handstamp.
All are addressed to J. Kirkwood or W.F. Canning, "R.S. 'Likin', Kowloon Customs and Post Office or Kowloon Dock c/o I.M. Customs Kowloon, Hong Kong". Kirkwood joined the Customs Coast staff in May 1872, and died aboard the revenue ship "Chuentiao" in 1905, while serving as its Senior Engineer.
