image image The balance of the John M. Gould correspondence, with U.S. and worldwide usages, however the most important part comprises more than 50 envelopes from Annie Gould in North China to her father in Portland, Maine between 1894-1900 with her observant and poignant letters detailing the social and political life of the period enclosed, and even though the majority have stamps missing, removed or defective with some true philatelic disasters as a result, there are still some intact envelopes with Koban uses from the Japanes P.O. in Shanghai and Tientsin, including 1898 cover showing "Tientsin" dollar dater (Mar. 7) in brown in combination with Koban 10s (irregularly separated vertically) canceled at Shanghai, 1898 cover showing "Peking" dollar dater in combination with Koban 10s (trimmed at right) with "I.P.O." tie-print canceled at Shanghai, 1898 cover showing "Tientsin" double-ring datestamp (Nov. 13) in blue with "Customs" removed, 1898 cover bearing ICP 10c canceled by pakua at Tientsin with matching dollar dater (Dec. 12) in combination with Koban 10s canceled at Shanghai, and 1899 cover showing "ost Office/Paoting" tombstone handstamp and "Tientsin" double-ring datestamp (Mar. 27) in blue with "Customs" removed in combination with Koban 10s (lower left corner missing) canceled at Shanghai. image image Assembly of documents primarily relating to the murder of Annie Allender Gould during the Boxer Rebellion, July 1, 1900, containing the claims of John M. Gould against the Chinese Government for the "massacre" of his daughter and her fellow worker, Mary S. Morrill, with numerous official letters and correspondence (with envelopes) between Gould and the State Department, including the relevant financial documents, with the 1903 settlement of $7,791.64 "for her death and loss of personal property, etc., growing out of the Boxer uprising in China in 1900"; also typed transcripts of various 1893-94 descriptive letters sent from Annie in Paotingfu following her arrival in China in 1893, and transcripts of four 1900 (June 14-July 27) touching letters sent to Annie by her father enquiring about her welfare, but never received, Very Good to Very Fine,

In his original claim, John M. Gould wrote that: "About 9 o'clock A.M. of the 1st day of July 1900 the gates of the Mission compound were broken; she and others were violently taken and dragged (she being unconscious the most of the time) to a so called 'Boxer' temple from which about sunset she was led bound outside the city wall and beheaded by the 'Boxers'; the military and police force and all National and local officials making no attempt to prevent this outrage, but rather encouraging it."
