image (Monterey) "Magistrates Office, Monterey Sept. 2nd 1847". Dateline on blue folded letter from Walter Colton, Alcalde of Monterey addressed to John Burton, Alcalde of Pueblo de San Jose; some minor toning, F.-V.F., a scarce letter carried by Kearny's semi-monthly military mail.

Rev. Walter Colton was named Alcalde of Monterey by Commodore Stockton. Robert Semple and Colton established the "Californian", the first newspaper to be published in California Aug. 16, 1847.

image (San Jose) "Pueblo de S. Jose Julio 22 Jul 1838". Datelined on 2+ page folded letter written in Spanish to Antonio Peralta, Rancho San Antonio, Very Fine and rare early San Jose letter.

Pacheco's Ranch was 18,000 acres in Contra Costa County. Rancho San Antonio, also known as the Peralta Grant, was a 44,800-acre land grant by Governor Pablo Vicente de Solá, the last Spanish governor of California, to Don Luís María Peralta, a sergeant in the Spanish Army and later, commissioner of the Pueblo of San José, in recognition of his forty years of service. The grant, issued on August 3, 1820, embraced the sites of the cities of San Leandro, Oakland, Alameda, Emeryville, Piedmont, Berkeley, and Albany.

ONE OF ONLY 7 RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE PMSS "STEAM ACAPULCO" OVAL HANDSTAMP.

San Francisco used a set of four oval steam markings indicating origin used in association with the four stops of the PMSS Co. ships running from Panama to San Francisco: Panama, Mazatlan, Acapulco, and Manzanillo. There are 47 covers total recorded by Mayer, of which only 7 are known for Acapulco.

USS "Resaca" was a third-class screw steamer of the United States Navy launched in 1865. Assigned to the Pacific Station, Resaca was initially ordered to relieve the sloop Jamestown cruising off the Mexican and Central American coast in protection of U.S. citizens and property against threats of war and an uncertain political situation.
