Gordon & Talbot in New York and forwarded to Newport R.I., endorsed "Via Marseilles" at top left, back flap with partial "Hong Kong" double-arc and red London (10.15) transit backstamps, manuscript "5/5" due rating, G.B. "140" debit to U.S., carried by Collins Line Arctic from Liverpool Oct. 19th to New York arriving Oct. 30th, black "New-York, Am. Pkt. Oct 31" exchange cds with ms. A MAGNIFICENT GEM USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 1¢ TYPE IIIA ISSUE FROM PLATE 11.

Plate 11 stamps were placed into use at the very end of 1860, approximately six months before new National Banknote stamps were to be issued. These stamps suffered as a rule from rather poor perforating making plate 11 stamps far more difficult to obtain in such exceptional condition.

Oct 23" double-circle datestamp with duplexed grid; reduced at left barely into corner card and blue oval, fresh and Very Fine, ex-West, Krug and Antrim.

ONE OF ONLY FOUR RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE RARE CHICAGO "OLD STAMPS NOT RECOGNIZED" HANDSTAMP, OF WHICH ONLY TWO RECORDED WITH THE 1861 ISSUE USED IN COMBINATION WITH THE DEMONETIZED 1857 ISSUE.

The Chicago post office marked the covers with a recording number that corresponds to advertised notices that mail was being held for postage.

Our records contain only four covers bearing the Chicago "Old Stamps Not Recognized" handstamp as follows:
1. 1861 Aug. 30, Chicago Ill. to St. Peter Minn., 3¢ #26 franking, ex-Grunin, Piller.
2. 1861 Oct. 02, Chicago Ill. to Wiscasset Me., 3¢ #26 franking, ex-Haas, Lake Shore.
