image Confederacy, 1861, 5¢ olive green. Horizontal pair, large margins to barely in at bottom, canceled by smudged manuscript marks (ink ties through envelope that is visible on the inside), paying required C.S.A. postage on 1861 cover to Col. Lomax, 3rd Regt. Ala. Volunteers, Norfolk Va., blue "Southern Express Co. Montgomery Ala. Dec. 12" double-circle datestamp and bold matching "Montgomery Alabama Southern Express" in circle; faint toning, Very Fine, ex-Engel, Brandon, with 1973 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 1c; Estimate $3,000 - 4,000.

ONE OF FIVE RECORDED COVERS FROM THE SOUTHERN EXPRESS COMPANY IN MONTGOMERY, ALABAMA.

Colonel Tennent Lomax was a resident of Montgomery commissioned as a Lt. Colonel at the outbreak of war leading the 3rd Alabama Infantry Regiment. His regiment was ordered to defend the Naval Yard at Norfolk Va., which was held by Confederate forces until May 1862. During this period at Norfolk, his wife sent him express mail from Montgomery to his regiment. He was promoted to Brigadier General in 1862. He was later killed at the Battle of Seven Pines on June 1, 1862.

The five recorded Southern Express Company covers from Montgomery are all from the Lomax correspondence:
1. Oct. 25, 1861, Montgomery Ala. Lomax correspondence to Norfolk Va., 10¢ 59XU4 provisional entire, ex-Brown, Hall.
2. Nov. 29, 1861, Montgomery Ala. Lomax correspondence to Norfolk Va., 5¢ #1c pair, ex-Shenfield, Walske.

5. Dec. 22, 1861, Montgomery Ala. Lomax correspondence to Norfolk Va., 10¢ #2b, ex-Emerson, Antrim, Wiseman, Kilbourne.

image Confederacy, 1863, 10¢ blue, "frame lines". No gum, crisp impression on bright paper showing complete framelines on three sides and most of frameline at top, a Superb gem, ex-Murphy (as middle stamp in strip of three), with 2015 P.F. & 2016 P.S.E. certificates, both Graded (Superb 98, SMQ $13,000).
Scott No. 10; $3,500.

AN EXTRAORDINARY UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES 10¢ FRAMELINE ISSUE GRADED SUPERB 98 BY BOTH THE P.S.E. AND P.F.

The framelines are the most important characteristic of Scott 10. The lines were engraved on the plate and served as a guide for the siderographer when aligning the transfer roll to make the plate. Since each stamp shares framelines with the adjoining positions, the example offered here with essentially four intact framelines is a true condition rarity.
