image 1946 Canada E11 Special Delivery Stamp on Registered Airmail Cover from Austria, Salzburg to Cobourg Ontario, SEP.4.1951 by registered airmail. For special delivery service in Canada the sender used a Canadian SD-8 label, which apparently prompted a small debate at the post office. The Austrian clerk struck out the SD-8, applied the registration label over it and cancelled the Austrian stamps. The sender then applied the 1946 Canadian SD 10c issue and a new SD-8 label. The stamp was accepted as paying special delivery and correctly cancelled by the Montréal Airport Mail Facility on SEP.8. Despite the Air Mail instruction, the post office sent the letter by the Montréal and Toronto Railway Post Office as a quicker way - it was received in Cobourg the same day. A rare and unusual item which is ideal for display. Some creasing but still very fine. (Image)
