image Worldwide Accumulations of About 600 First Flight and 500 Commercial Covers, 1950s to 2000, to and from many countries, in good to fine condition. Most are from flights of major commercial airlines, seemingly on the first run of a new route or to a new destination on an existing route. We noted some with flight crew signatures and saw some "around the world" flights with notations about flying time. Unchecked by us for rates, cachets and postmarks, we are sure there will be some happy moments of sorting and organizing. Totaling more than 1,100 covers, we think our estimate may be low compared to their actual value. See photos for a pilot's-eye view of this fun group. (Image)

image Iraq, Three 1927 Basra to Cairo Despatch Flight Covers, with three different flights (JAN.29, FEB.27 and MAR.10), each franked differently and each with violet boxed "AIR MAIL SERVICE / BASRA - CAIRO / (KARACHI D.P.O.)" cachet and single-line red "AIR MAIL - Urgent - Basra - Cairo" cachets on two, the other reads "Urgent By Aeroplane / Basra - Cairo". All three addressed to Warwicks England, with Basrah backstamps. In his excellent book, Mr. Pradip Jain writes: "On 6th January 1927, Imperial Airways took over the operation of the Cairo - Baghdad service and extended the route to Basra. The fortnightly flight increased to weekly from 13th April 1927. First flight from Basra was on 7th January 1927". A very fine trio from the Leon Pont collection. (Image)
