1868 15c Deep Violet Large Queen on Thick Paper, used with AUG.17.1880 (year slug inverted) c.d.s. from Québec city. A fresh and sound stamp with deep colour and fine centered. A difficult stamp to find not only sound (these usually have thins due to the nature of the paper) but also fully dated. (Image)

An overall nice quality collection, with many shades and papers and we note several very fine centered stamps. The Scott catalogue value given is for least expensive papers, shades, perforations or other factors, so actual value will be higher. Group of Select Used Large Queens, with four ½c, including thin paper, perf 11½, one is dated 1875 (scarce), 1c brown red with letter A of watermark (small tear), 1c yellow with 1869 town cancel, 1c yellow orange x2, with 2-ring 3 and fancy leaf cancel (sulphuretted), 5c with 1875 blue cancel, 6c brown x4, with Hamilton 5, London 6 and two nice fancy corks, two 12½c one extremely fine and the other with large margins and a socked on the nose 2-ring #8 from Ottawa, and five nice 15c stamps including three dated. Ca. 1869-70 Louis Riel Essay in Red, imperforate with margin just cut into at top, on vertically wove paper, reading "Republique Canadienne / Canadian Republic", with no denomination. Much has been written about this essay, including that it might have been produced by Henry Robinson, of the New Nation newspaper for the Provisional Government PM, A. Bannatyne, or even printed by the foreman of the "Norwester", a newspaper in Fort Garry. A rare early Canadian essay, with only 8 to 10 copies known in this colour, small black spot on front, still fine. Accompanied by a 1997 Saskatoon Stamp Centre Guarantee of Authenticity. (Image)

1870 1c Orange Small Queen, First Printing, a mint block of 9, with full original gum. The stamps are all very well centered with deep colour, and 5 stamps are never hinged.
