MR1E-A, 1870/71 "U.S. Return Postal Card" 6c Essay, design of the 1869 6c stamp (twice the 3c first class rate, then applicable to cards as well as letters) on .0135-+ thick faint orange-yellow card, top line "Write the message on the other side—leave space for reply", bottom line "Write the first address below—the other above this line", at left "Erase first address before mailing", trivial wrinkles and blunted corners, Very Fine and extremely rare with only two examples recorded, although the designer and date are unknown this is considered to be the first essay for a United States message/reply card (USPCC $4,000) (Image)
