image 1837 Folded Letter Philadelphia to Pictou, Nova Scotia via Robinstown Maine, datelined "Phila 26th Sep 1837", blue "Philadelphia Pa Sep 26" cds, lightly struck "St Andrews" transit cancel, various notations in upper right corner deal with postage charges which were first figured in error, crossed out and a new set added to the left, in effect (according to analysis of the cover by Susan McDonald) the clerk in St Andrews had to figure the postage due on the incoming letter as US postage was not paid but was figured at 27c equivalent (the postage on most incoming letters entering at NY or Boston) instead of 25c and the figuring was redone to show a fee of "2N' (2/-) but why this figured is crossed out was not determined, also missing was to indicate an additional 1/- due for the additional postage from St John to Pictou, some aging along a vertical file fold, Fine and unusual, accompanied by cover analysis from Susan McDonald (Image)
