World War II Censor Mark, bold strike of the "tombstone" censor mark in blue- violet rather than the usual red, partially overlaps the "Post Office/ Maritime Mail" handstamp, addressed to Kingston-On-Thames, England and forwarded to Nottingham, Very Fine; cover from the garrison commander, Lt Cdr EJ Wooley (also surgeon) and addressed to his wife or mother and it is only from his dated initials in the censor handstamp ("E.J.W. 13/10") that it is certain the cover originated in Tristan; accompanied by a 1943 folded hand-written note on "Naval Message" form certifying the presence of mice and rats on the island and that they are "not related to each other and are separate and distinct species", nice strike of the "Medical Officer-In-Charge/ Tristan Da Cunha/ 19 Jul 1943" double oval handstamp (Image)

Non-Official Cachets, Edgar Weston (Victor Marsh), 1951, "Tristan Da Cunha/ Edinburgh Settlement" ("Horseshoe") cachet on an envelope addressed to Marsh, the cachet ties GB ½d Due, typed "P.P. Rate/ Postage Due ½d" at upper left, GB 3d Due affixed and tied by "Richmond and Twickenham 23 JU 51" cancel with another strike adjacent to the cachet, "3D O2L" due marking, Very FinernIn 1951, Edgar Weston (a.k.a. Victor Marsh), who supplied the Type III cachet, attempted to have a new cachet authenticated. He sent a batch of 1,000 covers, pre-stamped and already franked with this new "Horseshoe" cachet to the island. His intention was to have the covers included in the regular Tristan mail by Mrs Lily Glass. However, the administrator declined to approve this scheme and the covers were returned in bulk. Weston dropped some of these returned covers (as offered here) in an attempt to authenticate the use. The handstamp was sent to Mr Harding, the island's schoolteacher who used it privately on mails (a 1956 airletter is included showing his use of the cachet) (Image)
