1894: "Africa Essays", the exceptional "Appendix" sheet from the De La Rue archives with 15 perforated Color Trials all for 2½d values in different colours, annotated in manuscript with values from ½d to a proposed £5 value in royal purple, Very Fine and choice exhibit page; ex-"Rectangular Issues", Spink, Sept 2007, lot 59.rn A similar page is illustrated in the "De La Rue Collection" edited by Frank Walton on page 6001 headed "Appendix for the South African Republic" dated on the same day - this being the duplicate sheet produced for the Cape Colony. The Essays were produced in an effort to amagamate the Cape, Natal, OFS and Transvaal issues to equal values and colours to facilitate handling: note that the ½d., 1d. and 2½d. are in the UPU colors of green, red and blue respectively.
