Type IVa and Type Va Combination; 1929, nice strikes of each of these cachets on an envelope addressed to England, full "1½d F.B." due marking with GB ½d Dues strip of three affixed and tied by Twickenham 27 JU 29 cancels, London Paquebot 26 JU 29 cds, foxing spots each side but still Fine and rare being one of just two recorded examples of covers with a combination of these two rare cachets - the other known example has the Type IVa on front side and the Type Va on the back; the cover was carried on the "Halesius" mailing of May 15, 1929 and is the latest known use of the Type IVa cachetrnProvenance: Dr Gene Scott (Image)
1929 Letters from Mrs Andrew Swain to Mrs Cave (England), two letters datelined "Tristan da Cunha/ 26 March 1929" or "May 16 1929", each with some observations on island life including "..can you send me a pair of shoes for my little boy..", "..we had a very poor crop of potatoes this year. The grubs ate them..", "..the children do sit by the fire crying for something to eat..", "..a steamer is in sight..", etc., Fine content (Image)
Type V, 1935, fair strike on an envelope addressed to USA and with accompanying letter from Robert Glass thanking him for his gift, envelope with bit of wrinkling at top, Fine use; the letter mentions arrival of the "Empress of Australia on the 23rd of last month" and "we had the Dutch Samerine (sic) the day before" indicating a 1935 letter which also mentions "170 people at present" (Image)
Type V, 1935, nice strike ties South Africa 1910 2½d Parliament (pre-affixing crease) on envelope addressed to Tristan da Cunha, also tied by a Johannesburg 14 Dec 35 cancel, airmail etiquette at upper left, backstamped Johannesburg 24.VIII.36, Fine use; cover was flown from Johannesburg to Cape Town and then carried on the "Larrinaga" which arrived in Tristan on 28 Dec 1935, envelope was returned to sender via "S.S. Wilde on back - "Sent to Tristan da Cunha by mail which left England on 29th November, 1935 per R.M.M.V. "Warwick Castle"...carried the mail to Durban, whence it was carried to Tristan da Cunha by the "S.S. Private "Cutress" Handstamp, 1936, two covers, each with "Tristan da Cunha" handstamp over a Type V cachet, each addressed to "G.P. Cutress" in England and charged 1½d due, one cover franked with ½d, 1d Victoria Jubilee issue (demonetized at the time and hence postmaster charged the postage due), Very Fine, each cover left the island on "SS Harmala", the franked cover signed Sismondo and with his 2004 certificate rnFor many years it was assumed this marking was a third version of the Durban handstamp. However, recent research has shown that, apart from all known covers being addressed to Mr Cutress, the typesetting of the letters is different than the Durban cachet. Also, it is always applied over any Tristan cachets. This leads to the conclusion that the cachet was Mr Cutress's own cachet, possibly modelled after the Durban handstamp, and was applied post-delivery in the UK. (Image)

Carlisle - March 1937" cover, addressed to South Africa, nice strike of the cachet adjacent to the maps, bold "1d" (due) handstamp plus "Cape Town/ Paquebot 8 Mar 37" cancel, South Africa 1d postage due affixed and tied by indistinct postmark, includes the stiffener with typed notice regarding production of the cover, signed by the ship's mail officer at lower right, Very Fine and attractive; produced on board the ship (500 copies) as a souvenir for officers of the visit and shows a map of the island and its position in the South Atlantic (Image)

After Lindsay's death, Gerry Bullock and George Crabb traced and then purchased the Type Va handstamp. King William which departed Tristan on Feb 14, 1932. The enclosed letter from Frances Repetto is datelined at Tristan the same day. In it she mentions that a ship has not stopped by the island for 10 months, the bishop of St Helena visit, and other bits concerning life on the island. There was a period in 1932 when there was no cachet available as it had been taken by Rev Partridge on a 5-month leave of absence from Jan-May 1932.rn (Image)
