Type I; 1908, desirable full strike on an envelope addressed to Glasgow N.B., manuscript "Tristan De Auchuna" vertically along left edge, Cape Town DE 25 08 cancel with accompanying framed "T 10c" and "1d" due markings (these were never collected), cover faults/ repairs, nice early use from the first mailing using this cachet; the type I cachet was supplied by Casper Keytel of Cape Town in early March of 1908 and was first used by the American whaling ship "Canton". The cachet was in use until December 13, 1919. (Image)
Type I, c. 1921, five impressions (two very light), two on a thick piece of manila board and the other three on a block of four of a GB 4d postal stationery cutouts, Very Fine, likely to have been done for "Edgar Weston" (Victor Marsh), a London dealer (see Crabb pg 165-67) (Image)
Type I, c. 1921, light strike on a small piece with "pair" of GB 1d postal stationery cut-outs affixed, Very Fine; a British dealer, Edgar Weston, supplied the Type III cachet to the island in 1921 and in return received the Type I handstamp, which he subsequently used to cancel various stamps and his well-known cut-outs, many on piece. While they are genuine examples of the Type I cachet, they are in reality a dealer's made-up material. (Image)

Type III, 1922, two strikes of the cachet tie four GB 1d postal card cutouts on an envelope addressed to "inscrutable" dealer Edgar Weston in London, backstamped Rio De Janeiro 9.IV.22 and Stockwell UK 2 MY 22, notation "Registered" at upper left but no registry service was available in Tristan at the time and the registry lines are "crossed out", cover open three sides for display, Fine use, the Type III cachet was provided to the island by Edgar Weston but before sending it out he used it on a large number for his postal stationery cut-out covers, very few of which went through the mail. This genuinely used, and hence rare, Weston cover was from the second use of the cachet and was taken off the island by the "Tacoma Maru" (Image)

Type III, 1929, faint but full strike of the cachet at the top of a hand-written letter to "Mrs Cave" from Andrew Swain in which he tells of additions to his family and laments "I cannot write you a long letter this time as I am anxious to write all my friends as we hear that a ship will be coming this way and might call", letter with a small tape stain at bottom, Fine and unusual use; this letter left the island on the "Halesius" on May 14, 1929; The cachets were, on rare occasion, used on letters due to extraordinary circumstances rather than normal practice. The Rev Partridge arrived in Feb 1929 to replace ailing Rev Pooley, brought the Type V cachet with him. It appears that in the interim, islanders gained control of the Type III cachet to create unique items. (Image)

Pooley and Lindsay arrived in March 1927 bringing the new Type IV cachet. Lindsay took strict control of the (now three) existing cachets and their application to letters, even forcing dealers to send clothing and food to the islanders before he would stamp their letters. Type IVa, 1928, legal-sized printed matter cover front addressed to Liverpool franked with GB ½d George V (3 singles) which are tied by the Type IV cachet, a full strike of the Type IVa cachet and the bandeau (that which makes the Type IV a Type IVa) are alongside to the left, manuscript (in Rev Pooley's hand) "28.10,28" date below the franking, small nick at the bottom but overall Very Fine cover from the first mailing of the Type IVa cachet showing all three combinations of the cachet, departed from the island on the "Baron Tweedsmouth" on Oct 28, 1928. It is thought that this ship, on its way to Calcutta, brought the "Island Of" handstamp to Rev Pooley. (Image)
