82XU2, Thomasville, Georgia, 1861 5c Black entire, clear strike of the provisional at the top right of a fresh cover with a clear "Thomasville Ga. Dec. 10" circular datestamp at bottom right, addressed to "W.D. Mitchell, Capt. the Cty. Volunteers, Savannah Georgia," barely reduced at right just touching provisional marking, Extremely Fine, 1989 Philatelic Foundation certificate and initialed by Trish Kaufman ("PAK") on back, ex-Clippert, Frank Crown records only 37 examples of this provisional (Scott $1,000)rnWilliam Dickey Mitchell was born on January 8, 1839. He enlisted as a Captain and was commissioned into Company G of the 29th Infantry (originally in the Savannah area then joined the Army of Tennessee) where he was promoted to Lt. Col and later Colonel. He was wounded at Chickamauga and taken prisoner at Nashville. He was confined to Johnson's Island from until release July 25, 1865. He died on October 17, 1892 at the age of 53. (Image)
