May 25 [1851]" cds to Freiwaldau in Austria, red "52" charged upon arrival, variety of different transit/arrival backstamps, stamp repaired with portion of margins added at top and left, still a Fine and scarce Transatlantic use of the 1847 issue, with the 5c stamp paying British open mail rate by British packet, 1s6d marked debit to Prussia (8p sea postage from US to GB, 6p for British transport, 4p for double weight letter carried by Belgian transit), then 52kr marked due by Austria equaling 18p owed to Britain (43kr) plus 9kr for internal mail transit, 2005 Philatelic Foundation certificate (Image)

Positions 6 and 8 are the best, while positions 3, 4, 5 and 9 are the less distinct examples. The recipient of this wrapper, Henry Browne Blackwell (May 4, 1825 - September 7, 1909), was one of the founders of Abraham Lincoln-+s Republican Party and the American Woman Suffrage Association. He was also the brother of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to earn a medical degree in the US, and the husband of Lucy Stone, an important advocate for woman's rights in the 1840's until her death in 1893.
