1901 (4 Apr) cover sent by the "Grunberg and Reilly" firm in Port Arthur, China to New York, franked with 10k "Kitai", tied by Chifu Russian Post Office cds, with Chinese "Chefoo" and Shanghai (8.4) transits, additional Russian Post Office in Shanghai, sent via Yokohama and Nagasaki, with New York arrival on back, fine (this cover, stationery of timber importers Grunberg and Reilly, was posted on a ship at Port Arthur and postmarked upon arrival in Chefoo, where it received the violet PAQUEBOT handstamp. Sidney George Reilly, known as "Ace of Spies", was a Russian-born adventurer and secret agent employed by Scotland Yard's Special Branch and later by the Foreign Section of the British Secret Service Bureau, the precursor to the modern British Secret Intelligence Service. He arrived in Port Arthur in early 1901 in the guise of a timber company owner. He remained there for four years, acting as a double agent for the British and the Japanese governments. 1904 (1 Mar) registered cover from Tsitsikar, Manchuria to Germany (addressed to the mother of a German officer serving in China), franked with 20k carmine & blue, tied by "Cicikar Polev. Pocht. Tel. Odp. Priam. Okr" cds, repeated alongside, with Registry label in Cyrillic, Darmstadt (4 Apr) arrival and complete wax seal ("Clerk 6th Class of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs") on back, minor cover faults and repaired internal tear along the franking, otherwise fine. (The Tsitsikar field post establishment opened in October 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion. This cover was sent by Nikolai Gotfridovich Poppe (1870-1913), an interpreter for the Russian occupation forces in Tsitsikar. He was later consul in Tientsin from 1907 to 1909, then consul general in Harbin. In September 1913 he took sick leave and left Harbin for St. Petersburg but died in transit at Ufa railway station) (Image)

1854 10k stationery entire envelope with indicia on back, canceled by pen and sent from Kyakhta to St. Petersburg, with framed "Kyakhta 16 Nov 1854" departure and "Polucheno 20 Dec" St. Petersburg arrival pmks on back. This cover is described in Thilingirian "Stamps of the Russian Empire Used Abroad", on page 567 (at the time "earliest item reported so far from Kyakhta"), sent by a Russian trader residing in Kyakhta to an instructor at the St. Anna School which educated many prominent Russians, including Faberge (Kyakhta is a town located on the Kyakhta River near the Mongolia-Russia border. The town stands directly opposite the Mongolian border town of Altanbulag). A wonderful rarity, one of only five (!) recorded postal items from Kyachta (Image)

1883 (13 Dec) cover franked with 7k gray & rose, sent from Kars to Port-le-Grand, France, then forwarded to Paris. Postmarked in
Kars (13.12.83 and 14.12), with Postal Wagon No. 71 (23.12, Kovel-Mlava rail line), Abbeville (7.1.84), and Paris (8.1) pmks on back. This is the earliest known mail from Kars, where postal operations began in late 1878 after Russia acquired Kars from Turkey. Kars reverted to Turkey in 1921. Sent to Fernand Hecquet d'Orval (1851-1911), a French cavalry officer (in May 1919 Kars came under the full administration of the Armenian Republic and became the capital of the Vanand province. In 1920, four Turkish divisions under the command of General Karabekir invaded the Armenian Republic, triggering the Turkish-Armenian War. Kars had been fortified to withstand a lengthy siege but was taken with little resistance by Turkish forces on 30 October 1920, in what has been called one of the worst military fiascoes in Armenian history. Armenia was forced to give back all the Ottoman territories granted to it in the Treaty of Sevres. After the Bolshevik advance into Armenia, the Treaty of Alexandropol was superseded by the Treaty of Kars (October 23, 1921), signed between Turkey and the Soviet Union) (Image)

1888 (16 Sep) FL from Tobolsk to the Yugansk native board in Surgut, with Tobolsk departure and Surgut (21 Sep) arrival pmks, bearing the seal (torn on opening) of the Tobolsk-Surgut circuit court. The letter reports that "a certain native was convicted of stealing four pounds of flour (worth 3 rubles, 84 kopecks) from another native in Surgut, and was sentenced to a month and a half in prison." This letter traveled by ship on the Ob and Irtysh Rivers (Image)

1888 (20 July) money letter sent from Temir-Khan-Shura in Dagestan to the Imperial Russian Consul General in Cairo, with Temir-Khan-Shura departure cds, sent via Odessa (28.7 and 29.7), and Volochisk (31.7). The letter contained 61 rubles to be transmitted to a resident of Dagestan who was then in Cairo. Postage was 59k (3x7k for weight, 31k for the 1/2% insurance fee rounded up, and 7k for registration). Routed via Austria, the required route for money letters addressed to Egypt. 1894 (28 May) registered cover franked with 20k carmine & blue on back, sent from "Osh" (Fergana) to Stockholm, by the explorer Sven Hedin to Carl Lewenhaupt, the Swedish foreign minister, with 26.6.94 arrival pmk. Sven Hedin was at that time in Kashgar in Chinese Turkestan and this cover was taken by courier from the Russian consulate in Kashgar to the nearest Russian post office in Osh, v.f. (perched in the mountains at the end of the Fergana Valley, on the border with Uzbekistan, Osh is one of the Silk Roads' oldest and most famous market towns. The city was occupied and annexed by the Russian Empire in 1876 when Russia overwhelmed the Central Asian khanates during the so-called "Great Game", the contest between Britain and Russia for dominance in Central Asia. This conquest was achieved and the inclusion to the Russian empire made by the mid 1880s) (Image)

1897 (21 Jan) registered money letter from Semipalatinsk to Horovice, Austria, canceled on departure in Semipalatinsk, with transit markings of Moscow (2.2 and 3.2), Granitsa (6.2 and 7.2), arriving Horovice (22.2). The (incorrect) postage initially assessed was 37 kopecks (20 kopecks for weight, 7 kopecks for insurance, and 10 kopecks for registration). The clerk changed the insurance fee to 3 kopecks, the correct rate for countries bordering Russia (today Semey, until 2007 known as Semipalatinsk and in 1917-20 as Alash-kala, is a city in East Kazakhstan Region, and in the Kazakhstan part of Siberia) (Image)

I have still 90 miles to my place of destination. On my way I have visited many copper and silver mines and have already a very clear idea about ores and mining in this place.
