image [Montana Territory] Collection Montana Territorial covers. A marvelous holding of about 200 cards or covers arranged alphabetically in a large file box. 90 different towns are represented with 5-10 of the larger towns, like Bozeman, Butte City, Helena and Virginia City, but most towns with just one or two examples and duplicates are often different types. Included are the following, presumably rare towns, none of which had been recorded at the time of Shellen & Dunn's 2003 Montana Territorial postmarks: Birney, Mont. double-lined c.d.s., Feb 20, 1883 with a fancy star killer on a 3¢ green (184); Oka, Mont. light magenta double-lined double circle, Aug 12, 1883 on a 3¢ green (207); Prickly Pear, M.T. Jan 15 c.d.s. on violet Post Office Official Business envelope to the Postmaster at Jefferson City; Rosebud, Mont. (Rosebud Co.), double-lined c.d.s., May 16, 1887 on a 2¢ red brown (210); Shawmut, Mont. c.d.s. with target (Shellen & Dunn record only a manuscript), May 1, 1886, with a 2¢ red brown (210); and Willow Creek, Mont. c.d.s. (again, only recorded as a manuscript), May 21, 1889, with a 2¢ green (213); other scarce towns noted include Forsyth, Hecla, Muir (sawtoothed oval complete with "Gallatin Co." (unlike the Shellen & Dunn illustration), Oct 30, 1882, and Warm Springs, Oct 20, 1887, Registered to New York (10¢ brown on 2¢ entire, 209, U277); a marvelous lot of this rarely seen material, generally F-VF.
