image [Florida] TALLAHASSEE / Flor., not-quite-complete strike of a type VII Nov 9 c.d.s. with a type h "FREE" and a type N "5" on a tan cover to Florida Senator D.L. Yulee in Washington D.C.; a bit soiled but still Very Fine. The "5" was either applied upon determining that the free status of the letter was not valid or prior to discovering that the letter could, indeed, be sent for free—neither marking has been annulled. This is the only recorded use of the type N "5" from Tallahassee; illustrated on page 405.

image [Florida] TALLAHASSEE / Flor., incomplete strike of a type VII c.d.s. in green, Dec 2 (1849) with a matching handstamped type F "10" on a folded letter to Keene, N.H.; tiny red handstamped "Advertised Jan 1, 1850" applied at Keene with a manuscript "2" added to the "10" and totaled to "12"; the letter was then forwarded to Chestertown, N.H. with a partial red Feb 18 c.d.s. and a manuscript "5" added to the "12" and totaled to "17". Fine and most unusual, the "Advertised" marking being exceptionally rare., Very Fine. 3-5 examples of the VIIF combination in green are recorded.

The letter is from General John P. DuVal, son of Florida's first Territorial Governor, William P. DuVal. He writes to the heirs of Revolutionary War Lieutenant Jonathan Holten of Cilley's N.H. Continental Regiment (the Second New Hampshire) re Veteran's Commutation Pay and Bounty Lands.

image [Michigan Territory] "Ann Arbor, May 12", manuscript postmark with a matching "10" rate on a pristine 1834 folded letter to the Governor of Michigan in Detroit; the letter, from "the agent of the Government for the Indian Department", George W. Jewett, requests redress for one John Thurston, who purchased a tract of land from the government for cultivation, only to be prevented from occupying it "by a number of Indians of the Potawatomy tribe who are preparing to plant corn & who with menaces of violence drove him off, and even threatened to shoot him, if he attempted to disturb their possessions.". A fascinating piece of Michigan Territorial history, Very Fine, Ex-Ebach.

Packet, Feb 21" c.d.s. and Liverpool (Mar 5 backstamp), and Calais with a clear Mar 6 entry handstamp and a manuscript "8", Extremely Fine and choice.

AN EXTRAORDINARY EXAMPLE OF THIS EXCEEDINGLY RARE MARKING—ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED AND THE ONLY ONE ON FOREIGN MAIL.

The official Registered Mail System in the U.S. did not begin until July 1, 1855. Prior to that, several post offices had their own markings for recording valuable mail, the best known being Philadelphia's "R" for "Recorded". A few towns near the Canadian border adopted the Canadian term, "Money Letter".
