Small collection of the 3¢ Motion Picture Industry stamp, perforated & imperforate, in the three basic colors, 28 stamps in total, with shades, block of four, and perforated 3¢ red tied by "Providence/R.I./Feb. 1 1949" machine cancel on local cover, mainly Very Fine. Estimate $500 - 750
In the early 1940s, a facsimile 3¢ stamp, based on the 5¢ Parcel Post issue, was produced for use by Hollywood studios on close-ups of letters in films, since the use of real postage stamps in photographs or film was prohibited under US law. The facsimile was inscribed simply "Postage", not "U.S. Parcel Post", so as not to circumvent the existing laws. The stamp made its most famous appearance in a close-up in a somewhat obscure MGM romantic comedy, "A Letter for Evie", directed by Jules Dassin and released in 1946. Despite the Secret Service's original permission for their production and circulation, the existing supplies and plates for these "stamps" were later confiscated after it was discovered that someone had attempted to use these labels on actual mail .
