image 1898, Trans-Miss., 1¢ to 10¢ (Scott 285-290), First Day, 1¢-10¢, Washington, D.C., to Germany, each tied by a light Washington D.C. double oval on a registered cover to Metz, Germany with a light strike of a violet "Registered, Jun 17, 1898, Washington D.C., Sub-Station No. 29, No. (manuscript) 766" postmark at the bottom; at the lower right is a New York Exchange Office registration label, and the cover is backstamped New York (Jun 18) and Metz (Jun 26); the 8¢ has a straight edge and there are minor mounting remnants on the reverse, Very Fine. This cover was prepared by J. Murray Bartels, whose "702 14th St." return address is just visible below the 1¢ stamp, Ex-McCoy, Harter, "World's Fair Collection", with 1987 & 2013 P.F. certificates.

The Trans-Miss. Exhibition opened in Omaha, Nebr. on June 1, but the stamps were not ready in time for the opening. They were first placed on sale in Washington D.C. and New York City on June 17, but were not available at the exhibition in Omaha until June 23. Covers are reported to have been seen from Harrisburg, Pa. dated as early as June 14.
