Oval postmark on cover bearing 3¢ rose (65) tied by circular grid cancel duplexed with partial St. Louis Mo. cds to Leavenworth Kans., original "Union Pacific Railway Company, Eastern Division" letterhead enclosure from Samuel Hallett, President of Union Pacific with some interesting content "…I undertaken to build the Railroad from Leavenworth, and from Wyandotte to Fort Riley, and, I shall do both…", F.-V.F. and important historical railroad document.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

In July 1864, Hallett was shot dead in Wyandotte before the track to Lawrence was opened. The company failed in its aim to control the route to the west coast.

image (Union Pacific Railroad) Green Riv. & Ogden R.P.O., Nov 1. Purple route agent cds duplex with cork cancel on 3¢ green entire with Wells Fargo & Co. paid frank to Elizabeth, N.J., Nov. 6th arrival backstamp, Very Fine and attractive use.

Although the contract with the Union Pacific Rail Road was between Omaha and Ogden at $320,912 a year for the 1,032 mile Route 34001 of 1873, the route was split into sections for the purposes of the Railway Post Office cars operating on the route. One section was between Ogden and Green River, Wyoming and an R.P.O. datestamp with the wording for this section was used by clerks on the car.

Carried east on the portion of Route 34001 operated by the Ogden to Green River clerks.

Put onto Route 16419 on November 8th circa 1873 and carried to Reno for transfer eastward via the Central Pacific R.R. Route 14701 for Ogden. The railroad was built to service the Comstock Load, the extensive gold and silver deposits found in northeast Nevada discovered in 1859.
