image (Michigan Southern Railroad) Mich. Southern R.R., Jun 4. Bold blue route agent cds ties 3¢ dull red (11A), additional pencil cancel on buff cover to Elkhart, Indiana; stamp oxidized, a Very Fine strike, Rarity VII.

Put onto Route 13018 on June 4th circa 1855 carried on the route to Elkhart located 101 miles east of Chicago and 143 miles west of Toledo.

The first contract with the Michigan Southern Rail Road was in July 1848 on the 68 miles of completed track between Monroe and Hillsdale. By 1854 the line had merged with the Northern Indiana & Chicago and renamed the Michigan Southern & Northern Indiana Rail Road. In July 1854, Route 13018 of 242 miles was contracted between Toledo and Chicago at $36,300 a year for a twice daily service excluding Sundays. The Route Agent's date stamps continued to be worded for the Michigan Southern.

Bush's Camp N.P.R.R. carried 20 miles south to the rail head at Tenino to be put onto Route 43001 for the 105½ miles south to Kalama. Transferred by stage to Portland and then railroad on Route 44001 to Roseburg.

The letter written by M.S. Bush, a construction manager on the line reads: "I am here on the NP.R.R. in charge of thirteen miles of clearing and expect to remain here all summer. I
am located Twenty Miles from Tenino, the end of track and twelve miles from Steilacom which is the nearest point on the Sound that the RR will come until the final terminus is fixed which will not be sometime yet. But whatever place is selected will certainly be a very large City in a very few years."

Station cds as corner corner handstamp, additional strike on reverse of yellow cover bearing 3¢ bright rose (65), cancelled by partial fancy shield cancel, matching "Sacramento, Cal., Oct 4, 1865" double-circle datestamp to Glenwood Seminary, West Brattleboro, Vt., endorsed "Per Overland Mail" at bottom left; reduced slightly at left, F.-V.F. and rare.

Incorporated in August 1852, the Sacramento Valley Railroad was the first operational steam railroad west of the Rocky Mountains and the first to carry mails under contract starting on July 1st 1858. The railroads first President was William Tecumseh Sherman, then employed to manage a branch of a St. Louis bank in Sacramento.

Endorsed "Pr Overland Mail" put onto Route 14793 for Indianapolis and carried to Sacramento to receive the Station Agent's CDS. Transferred to the overland mail coach via Salt Lake City to St. Louis and then eastward by railroad for West Brattleboro, VT.

image (Sioux City & Pembina Rail Road - Illinois Central Railroad) Ft. Dodge & S. City Agt., Oct 26. Route agent cds duplexed with cork cancel on 3¢ green (158) on "Dakota Southern and Sioux City & Pembina Railroads" corner card cover to Mansfield Pa., Very Fine.
Towle No. 759-K-2; Estimate $150 - 200.

The Sioux City & Pembina Rail Road was first contracted from July 1st 1876 for 30 miles between Sioux City and Portlandville at $1,350 a year for a daily service excluding Sundays. The road was absorbed into the Illinois Central Rail Road by 1878 who extended it eastward to Fort Dodge giving a total route distance of 134 miles.

Probably carried eastward from Sioux City on Route 27034 to receiving the Route Agent cds.
