image (North Eastern Railroad) North Eastern R.R., 12 Dec. Fine strike of cds ties 3¢ dull red (11A), four margins, on cover to Charleston S.C., original letter datelined "Chelsea 10 Dcr 1858", Very Fine and rare, Rarity X, ex-Hicks, Wyer.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS NORTH EASTERN RAILROAD AGENT CDS.

The North Eastern Railroad was chartered December 16th 1851 and constructed largely through the efforts of the City of Charleston. It was completed to Florence S.C. in November 1856, and route agent service commenced in 1858. After the Civil War, different postmarks were used. This letter was addressed to Branchville, where the line divided into two segments to Hamburg and Columbia.

"Chelsea 10th Der 1858" dateline being the plantation of Morton A. Waring located 6½ miles from Monks Comer on Route 6168. Carried 29 miles south to Charleston.

Bold red route agent cds ties 3¢ dull red (11A) large margins to just in including part of adjoining stamp at left, also tied by pencil cancel, on orange buff cover to Philadelphia Pa.; edge wear with corner flaws, Fine and rare, Rarity VIII, ex-Towle, Hannen.
Towle No. 302-A-1; Estimate $400 - 600.

The Orange & Alexandria was chartered in March 1848 and reached Gordonsville in March 1854 being contracted for Route 2724 from January 1854. The 88-mile route was given $4,850 a year for a daily service.

Put onto Route 2724 on April 20th circa 1855 and carried to Alexandria for onward carriage via Washington and Baltimore to Philadelphia.

The South Carolina Railroad was chartered December 10th 1827 as Charleston & Hamburg R.R., initial 6 miles completed in 1829, and the first U.S. mails carried by rail on December 1st 1831. Line completed to Hamburg in October 1833, and branches to Columbia in 1840 and Camden in September 1848. As the railroad post system grew in sophistication, several datestamps were procured along with ratemarks and cancels.
