USS "Dacotah" was commissioned in 1859 was a large 1,012 tons steam sloop that served the United States Navy in the Atlantic Ocean as well as in Pacific Ocean. When the American Civil War occurred, "Dacotah" assumed the role of a gunboat in the Union blockade of the Confederate States of America. When the war was over, "Dacotah", who was named for the American Dakota tribe, resumed her role protecting American interests worldwide by showing her presence in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia was a consolidation in 1869 of the East Tennessee & Virginia and the East Tennessee & Georgia Rail Roads. The 243 mile route between Bristol and Chattanooga via Knoxville was run under two contracts using a Railway Post Office car at $39,255 a year for a daily service.

A WONDERFUL SOUTHERN EXPRESS CO. USE WITH AN UNLISTED MISSISSIPPI CENTRAL R.R. STATION OVAL FROM VAIDEN.
The station of Vaiden was located 54 miles north of Canton on the Mississippi Central Railroad. They were contracted for Route 7001 running 235½ miles between Canton and Jackson, Tennessee. Payment was $23,560 a year for a daily service excluding Sundays.
Put into the Vaiden Station on Route 7001 to receive the Station Agent's date stamp (Unlisted by Towle) and carried south to Canton. Transferred to Route 8002 of 206 miles for New Orleans on the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad.
The Southern Express Company was founded during the Confederacy, acted as an express delivery company in both the Southern States and the Mid-West. Est. $500-750 (Image)
