Steamer Kate Kearney. Red octagonal handstamp on blue folded letter datelined "St. Louis July 19th 1851" to Alexandria Mo., care notation at left and receipt docketing at top; some fold toning, F.-V.F. and rare,This is the Milgram listing example.. Milgram No. 745; Estimate $500 - 750.
The "Kate Kearney" was owned by the St. Louis & Keokuk Packet Company and ran the 4832 contract route from St. Louis to Galena (shortened in Sept. 1852 to terminate at Keokuk). The letter states "I concluded you would not get an answer by telegraph any sooner than by the Kate this evening". Est. $500-750 (Image)

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THIS STEAMBOAT MIN-NE-HA-HA CORNER CARD COVER.
The Min-ne-ha-ha was built in 1857 and plied the waters of the Missouri River 1857-62. She was sold and used in New Orleans until she caught fire and was destroyed May 13, 1865. The Missouri River only had two contracted routes, these being on Routes 9029 and 10409 operating between Jefferson City and St. Joseph from July 1857 to June 1859.
We offered the other example of this Steamboat Min-Ne-Ha-Ha corner card in our Sale 57 of the Hugh Feldman collection where it realized $3,105, which at the time was believed unique until the example offered here surfaced. Est. $1,000-1,500 (Image)

Rev. John Cameron Lowrie (1808-1900) was appointed in 1832 by Western Foreign Missionary Society to open a mission in India. With Mr. & Mrs. William Reed, sailed from Philadelphia May 30, 1833, arriving in Calcutta Oct. 15th with his wife dying Nov. 21st. He carried on determined to found a mission station in some unoccupied area, finally reaching Lodiana Nov. 5th 1834. Broken by poor health and his bereavement of his wife's death, he returned to the U.S. in 1836. Est. $300-400 (Image)

The Act of October 10th 1814, made it illegal to place an outbound letter on any ship privately, unless the letter had first been presented to the British Post Office and a fee paid equal to one-third of the combined inland and sea packet postage. Upon payment, the letter received the "Withdrawn Ship Letter" handstamp and the sender was allowed to send the letter by any ship of his choice. In that the Post Office was providing no service at all for this little used and unpopular act, it as terminated on July 11th 1815. Est. $1,000-1,500 (Image)

Estimate; $500 - 750.
A SCARCE EXAMPLE OF THE PHILADELPHIA 20¾ RATE HANDSTAMP STRUCK IN RED, ONLY NINE RECORDED EXAMPLES.
Letter carried by ship to Marseilles, where it entered French mail system. At London, forwarding agent Heath, Furse & Co. (handstamp on reverse) paid 1s3d for ¼-½ oz letter, crossed thru their name in the address, and paid 1s packet postage to U.S. Letter rated at Philadelphia and not at arrival port of Boston. Postage due consisted of 2¢ ship fee plus 18¾¢ U.S. inland fee from Boston to Philadelphia. Italicized version of Philadelphia rate stamp in red quite scarce since color shifted to blue soon after its was introduced. Red strikes are recorded from June 1844 to October 1844.
"Special Arrangement" with the Liverpool Postmaster
Businessmen in Philadelphia and other eastern cities complained about delays in mail arriving via Boston, due to sorting and rating. After an 1843 request to the Liverpool Postmaster by the U.S. Postmaster General, from June 1844 to late 1848 mails to Philadelphia and ten other cities were made up in separate parcels in Liverpool. These were included in the New York bag, from where they were forwarded un-postmarked.
Philadelphia's 20¾ and circled 12 postmarks were obtained specifically for incoming British mails arriving via Boston under the Postmaster General's special arrangement with the Liverpool Postmaster. Est. $500-750 (Image)
