image (Oregon Route) Fort Laramie, O.R. "June 15". Discernible cds strike with manuscript date on buff cover bearing 3¢ dull red (11A) large margins except touched at bottom, tied by minor wrinkling, cancelled by unusual six-section grid cancel to Mount Vernon, Ohio, original letter datelined "Fort Laramie, May 28th 1852" from an Ohioan on his way to California opening "We arrived at the Fort about an hour since. All well and in good spirits we are now 636 miles from St. Joe we have had first rate weather and no accidents and will probably be in the South Pass in about 10 days we have traveled from Fort Kearney to this place in about 13 days and have had some of those storms that are generally great dread of immigrants on the Platt River…" and goes on to describe trip in detail, Very Fine and rare.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED FORT LARAMIE, OREGON ROUTE STAMPED USES.

A Post Office at Fort Laramie on the Oregon Route or Oregon Trail across the plains was established in 1850. The Post Office was located in unorganized territory but attached to Oregon Territory for administrative purposes and was the last Post Office on the Oregon Trail going west.

The two recorded Fort Laramie, O.R. stamped uses:
1. 1852 Jun. 15, Fort Laramie to Auburn, Illinois with 3¢ #11A sheet margin single (Ref. Chronicle 75, p. 152)
2. 1852 Jun. 15, Fort Laramie to Mount Vernon, Ohio with 3¢ #11A, cover offered here.
