Gray folded letter datelined "Lahaina, Maui, Sept 10th 1850" written by Royal Danish Consul Ludvig Holberg Anthon to his Aunt Lady Sophie Nelleman, sent to care of Charles Brewer & Co. at Boston, Mass. who forwarded, probably carried by Schooner Gazelle from Lahaina Oct. 31st to San Francisco arriving Oct. 28th, red orange "San Francisco '40' 1 Nov" integral-rate cds for 40¢ rate over 3,000 miles to Boston in care of Charles Brewer & Co. who forwarded it transatlantic privately, red Liverpool Paid (12.23) cds with red ms. "4" pence rating, endorsed "Bremen Steamer", red London Paid (12.24) transit and manuscript "10" debit, blue "K.D.O.P.A. Hamburg" (12.27) transit backstamp; some edge wear, Very Fine. THE ONLY RECORDED HONOLULU, HAWAII USE TO DENMARK BY THIS ROUTE VIA SAN FRANCISCO AND BOSTON.
The letter was written by Ludvig Holberg Anthon to his Aunt Lady Sophie Nellemann. Ludvig was the first Danish citizen to settle in Hawaii around late 1839 and operated as a merchant. He became the Royal Danish Consul to Hawaii in 1849. In April 1852, he sold his belongings and left Hawaii for Denmark with his wife, Elisabeth Louise and their two children. However, the following year in December 1853, they returned to Hawaii and he continued as the Danish Consul until they left for good in February 1858. Est. $6,000-8,000 (Image)

According to Fred Gregory's "Post Office in Paradise" website, There are only four examples of a Ulupalakua postmark recorded. One being the unique manuscript postmark (801) and three examples of the 30mm double lined outer and single lined inner circle date stamp (281.011) with another example of this postmark (EKU) being offered by us just last year.
