A WONDERFULLY CHOICE SOUND USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 1¢ TYPE I ISSUE FROM POSITION 7 ON THE RIGHT PANE OF PLATE ONE EARLY - ONE OF THE FEW SOUND EXAMPLES SHOWING THE COMPLETE DESIGN.
According to the Jerome S. Wagshal census of the Scott #5 (this example being 5-CAN-010) there are only 98 examples in all recorded. This example is one of a small handful of examples showing the complete design and one of a few also in sound condition. The unusual dark Plate 1E color was coined "Paris Blue" by Stanley B. AN EXTREMELY RARE SOLO CIRCULAR RATE USAGE OF THE 1851 1¢ TYPE IB FROM POSITION 6R1E - ONE OF THE TWO BEST POSITIONS.
Type Ib was produced only as an imperforate stamp. Only six positions on Plate 1 Early are Type Ib: Positions 3-6R and 8-9R. Type Ib is distinguished by showing complete design at top and nearly complete design at bottom. All Type Ib stamps are very scarce, and the two best examples (8R and 6R offered here) are rare. A RARE EARLY 1851 ISSUE TRANSATLANTIC USE TO RUSSIA.
William Louis Winans was a noted railway pioneer, who, with his brother, traveled to Russia in 1843 as part of a $3 million contract to supply railroad locomotives and cars for the new railroad between St. Petersburg and Moscow. From 1852, William was the chief manager of the Russian operation, which had a lucrative contract for making and maintaining running stock for the growing Russian railroad network--it was reported their contracted fees were 17 times higher than in any other country in Europe. During the Crimean War the firm's operations expanded, and Winans acted as the U.S. vice-consul in St. Petersburg. The contract expired in 1862, and Winans left Russia for London a millionaire.
