image 1938, 50¢ Presidential. Vertical pair, used with two 10¢ Prexie (815) singles, all tied by strikes of "New York, Morgan Annex, Feb 24, 1944" duplex on large-size green Red Cross envelope from Prisoner of War Camp, Camp Swift, Texas to Geneva, Switzerland at four-times the 30¢ per ½ oz. airmail rate, "U.S. Censorship, Examined by 503" circular handstamp, Very Fine.
Scott No. 831; Estimate $100 - 150.

Although normal air mail service to Switzerland was suspended from November 1942 to June 1945, express messages from POW's addressed to International Red Cross were allowed to pass through. This outer envelope was send from Camp Swift, Texas, censored in New York by POW censors and entered the mail stream at the 30¢ per ½ oz. rate.

The Foreign Division of the DLO returned this refused short paid foreign addressed letter to the addressee. Underpaid 3¢ of 5¢ rate (due) 15 centimes (3¢) applied at New York City. Per UPU practice letter due "3 pence" (6¢) per the "3" due handstamp in England. Refused and returned to the US, OLD applied "Return to Sender, Collect 6 cts." for short paid letter to be collected when delivered. Bisected due stamps applied in Brooklyn indicating amount of postage due.

Bold blood-red handstamp with two bars across circle on Feb. 7th 1845 folded letter from the Franklin House to local street address, the letter is datelined 1844 but docketed 1845, which is the accurate year for sequence with the other recorded cover; file folds, Very Fine strike, One of only 12 recorded examples of this Philadelphia Despatch Post handstamp., ex-Hollowbush, Golden, Morris, with 2000 P.F. certificate.
