image Bermuda, 1865, Queen Victoria, 1d rose red, perf 14, two singles. In combination with 1880, Queen Victoria, ½d stone (19) on cover to Greenfield, Mass., tied by the rare first type "Bermuda, R.O., De 9, 80" cds and "6" bar duplex postmark of Paget West, reverse with "New York, Dec 13" cds and circular "Paid All, FD" transit duplex, Very Fine.

A RARE USAGE OF THE PAGET WEST "6" FIRST TYPE DUPLEX POSTMARK ON COVER TO THE UNITED STATES.

The first duplex with number "6" was issued to receiving officer Thomas Burgess at Paget West at the time this cover was posted. There was no example of this cancellation on cover in the Ludington collection. This cover left for New York on December 9th by the S.S. "Flamborough".

image Bermuda, 1866, Queen Victoria, 2d dull blue, perf 14. Left wing margin single tied by "2" in oval barred cancel on cover to the Lt. Governor W.G. Hamley in St. George's, from the clerk of H.M. Council with sender's notation at lower left, matching "Bermuda, Paid, 7 Jy 66" cds, Very Fine. Scott No. 2.

The 2¢ stamp, which was issued on March 14th, 1866, was required for a letter weighting over one ounce. It was later that year when a minor act was passed exempting public service letters from postage.

image Bermuda, 1873, Queen Victoria, 6d dull mauve, perf 14. Tied by "Hamilton, Bermuda, Oc 9, 84" cds and barred "1" duplex on cover to Halifax, Nova Scotia paying the late fee of double the 3d rate; minor cover opening tears at top, Very Fine. Scott No. 5.

The rate to Canada was 3d per ½ oz., but this letter was posted after normal closing time for the mail by S.S. "Orinoco" leaving that afternoon. However by paying the late fee of double postage it caught the ship. The collection letter "B" in the date half of the Hamilton duplex provides confirmation.

The misspelled Inland-Island duplex (Ireland Island) is accompanied by the K1 "6" handstamp, previously of Southampton West, used as a supplementary postmark for a short period.
