Incoming "Consular Service, U.S.A." legal size cover franked with China 1900, 10¢ green, two singles (116) tied by "Foochow, 18 May, 02" cds, with "Shang-Hai, Chine, 23 Mai, 02" cds along side, reverse with Yokohama, Nagasaki and Seattle, Wash. transit cds's, clear "Nome, Alaska, Rec'd, Jul 8, 1902" backstamp alongside consulate wax seal; some minor cover wear and wrinkling, Very Fine.

A RARE USAGE FROM FOOCHOW, CHINA TO THE SOURDOUGH ROAD HOUSE IN ALASKA.

The recipient, Thel Wattach was one of the "Three Lucky Swedes" that discovered gold at Anvil Creek in 1898. This letter contained U.S. immigration documents
for Thel's wife's Chinese family. His roadhouse later became the Sourdough Lodge a few year later and was one of the oldest continuously operating roadhouses in Alaska.

Alfred Smith, president of the Enfield Falls Canal Company, proposed to change the name of Pine Meadow to Windsor Locks. The Windsor Locks Post Office was opened in 1833 and was located in a store near a grist mill owned by Charles Haskell Dexter. He eventually was appointed first postmaster.

image (New York) New-York, May 18. Remarkably clear strike of red "clamshell" datestamp and manuscript "12½" rating on 1798 folded cover to Suffield Conn., docketing on back extends to address panel, slightly worn file fold, still Extremely Fine and choice, ex-Hahn.
Estimate; $500 - 750.

The New York "Clamshell" marking is much scarcer in red and seldom clearly struck. According to Siegel, Cal Hahn noted this was the "3rd best red strike recorded" and he surely was in a position to know.
