image Confederacy, Jefferson Davis Medallion C.S.A. Lettersheet. Blue medallion patriotic lettersheet dated "March 5, 1862", and some interesting content reading in part "…I have witnessed many scenes of wonder and admiration since my exit from home. We are camped at one of the prettiest, lovely places you most ever saw. We are about one mile from the Atlantic Ocean. I went down upon the beach the other day to behold the ceaseless waves of the mighty deep, but could not learn from whence it came nor where it was bound…We live an uncertain life for we know not at what hour we may be attacked by the enemy. The idea of facing a cannon ball is by no means pleasant. One man's life is no sweeter than another. image Confederacy, South Carolina Palmetto Flag Lettersheet. Blue patriotic design on lettersheet datelined "Charleston April 24th _ 61" with some good content "…I commenced and nearly finished a letter to you soon after the victory of Fort Sumter. I was called from it and have not been able to renew my attention to it since, consequently, the date is too old to be of any interest to you for you must have been long since i n the possession of all the particulars of the battle. We have been quite quiet since. Our anxiety now is to get intelligence from Virginia & Maryland. Therefore, the Mercury is the most welcome visitor in the morning…Alich is still at Morris Island and has been promoted to Assistant Quarter Master under Major Pringle, who himself is under Col. Hatch He was fired at the Mortar Battery during the fight. You imagine our anxiety during the first day. Every cannon shook the house, and we knew not but that they carried death with them until the evening when the Dispatch came. "Not a soul hurt and hope and trust in God be some firmer." In the night the wind changed to the west, and we did not know what had transpired for we heard no cannon. In the course of the morning, the news reached us that the Fort was on fire. Olivia and myself got ready to go down to the Battery which had been thronged and just as we were going out of the door, we heard of the unconditional surrender and unparalleled in history. "Not a life lost."…we cannot tell what one day will bring forth, and can only trust in Him who knows our cause is just and has given us one victory over our enemies, will fight for us as He did for the Israelites, and subdue our enemies and induce them to do us justice…", accompanied by original cover bearing U.S. 3¢ dull red (26) tied by "Charleston S.c. There is only two companies in our Regiment that are drilled at the cannons. That is our company and the Milton Blues and we have to relieve one another alternately. I would much rather stay in the Regiment. I do not think very much of the old fellow who lives at the Battery. I think he is undoubtedly one of the meanest men I ever. I would like the best in world the Yankees could get a hold of him for awhile. I would not care much if they would hang him a little. While we have never had a chance as yet to try our hand on the Yankees, and if we remain here I don't think we will very soon. The scamps are getting a little sick of their trade. If they are, we are willing. You must tell Mag that as her hopes are all blasted, she had better come on and join the Army. This is the very place for disappointed lovers, so come ahead…Sallie, you must be sure to come on you and Miss Alice. You can have the best time in the world. You will be apt to create quite a sensation in camp.
