image Confederacy, (War Content) 1863, 20¢ green. Large margins with some small flaws, tied by red "Petersburg Va." cds on 1864 folded letter datelined "Petersburg, Oct. 17th 1864" with excellent content "…Gen. Lee is at the helm and he looks to God to crown his efforts. As long as Moses' hands were held up Israel prevailed. We ought to pray and do all that we can to hold up the hands and strengthen the hearts of our brave soldiers and pray to God to confound and bring to confusion the plans of our unnatural cruel enemies. Sherman, Hunter & Grant ought to be outlawed … We have heard nothing of the peace party at the North since the fall of Atlanta. We must whip them well or the democrats contend for the spoils that the republicans have now and for the last 4 years, touch the nerve of their pockets, when they can steal nothing more from the South, and the vibration will be felt and when the great North West finds that she is sold to New England without a price and that they can't have the free navigation of the Mississippi, they will then set up for themselves and fight like (Kilkenny cats.) … I would rather live in a cave, weak, the life of a hermit than live with the Yankees … The pickets are at the streets taking up every servant to put on the fortifications. They took Elleck a few days ago and Jim too but Mr. May interceded and got one off. It fell to Elleck to go. I would much rather it had been Jim for he is very lazy and self important. … They are increasing the Infantry from the Artillery, 20 out of 100 are to be sharp shooters, the Norfolk Blues had 150 well men, only 4 guns. A great many wounded Yankees white & Black side by side in the hospital here. One of the prisoners was asked what he was fighting for, he said for the cause, another for the other part of the Union, another for the Constitution. When asked what the constitution was, he did not know. An Indian from Iowa said he was fighting for the land they took from his great grandfather. T he Negroes say they were all drafted, made to fight. A great many have gone to them from here. The lines are so near. Think it is impossible to prevent it, as they know all the bye paths. If you have to send any on the fortifications, send those that are of the least value. Gen. Lee is near Richmond. He has not moved his headquarters from here. … Dr. Scott spent a week here in Sept. Called on Gen. Lee. … It reminded me of the other he told General Lee that he had a letter of introduction from Gen. Wise. … That was the remark General Lee made to me and no doubt did to him but left here last Thursday. … The Union farmers that would not take Confederate money have suffered as much as the loyal ones. No distinction in Grant's inhuman order. … I am sorry to hear William's health is not better. I think he is soured by the Yankee visit. He ought to see some of the refugees here that have been deprived of all, wealthy people, every thing taken, even the family Bibles & portraits are trophies of war…" and signed "C.M." (MacHartem); some soiling and wear, Fine.

The Army of the Potomac designation occurred June 2, 1861 when Beauregard took command at Manassas with his 6 brigades being the first corps. Johnston's Army of the Shenandoah with his 4 brigades became the Second Corps of the Army of the Potomac after his arrival July 20, 1861. This cover was sent after the Army had abandoned Manassas for the Peninsula just before the Army of the Potomac became the legendary Army of Northern Virginia when R.E. Lee took command on June 1, 1861.

Francis S. Bartow, was Captain of the Oglethorpe Rifles, an infantry company in Savannah. A detail from this volunteer unit captured Ft. Pulaski and the company became part of the 8th Georgia. Bartow was elected the regiment's Colonel and joined Johnston's Army of the Shenandoah. He was killed leading the 2nd Brigade at 1st Bull Run on July 21, 1861.
