General Price has taken Lexington with 5,000 prisoners together with all their arms, ammunition, etc. besides $250,000 in specie…We do not get news here until three days after you get it in Montgomery, for all we hear comes from Montgomery, and so you need not expect any war news from me or anyone else from this section of the country. But I believe honestly that Tuscaloosa is the prettiest place I ever laid my eyes on…The Cadets are almost crazy to be ordered down on the coast this winter. I think our chances are pretty good to be ordered to Mobile, for I believe it is generally thought that Mobile will be attacked this winter. If so, our chances are splendid, and I cannot help almost wishing (excuse me) that it would be attacked. Then wouldn't the Cadets make their mark. We are learning to drill very fast…We are State Troops and are held subject to the orders of the Governor. AN EXTREMELY RARE AND DESIRABLE 2¢ MEMPHIS PROVISIONAL USE ON COVER. ONE OF ONLY 13 RECORDED COVERS IN THE CROWN CENSUS.
The Memphis Confederate postmaster who issued the adhesive stamps and press printed envelope was Matthew Campbell Gallaway (1820-1898). He was a colorful newspaper editor and aide-de-camp to General Nathan Bedford Forrest. He was postmaster of Memphis until it fell to Federal forces in June 1862. In August 1866 Gallaway, after resuming his position as editor of the Avalanche, was shot through the hand in a murder attempt by a United States tax collector named G. W. Wood (New York Times, Aug. 26, 1866). Gallaway survived and continued working as a newspaper editor until his retirement in 1887. Scott $12,500 (Image)

Richard Parker (1810-1893) was a 19th century politician, Lawyer and Judge from Virginia. During his capacity as Judge of the 13th Judicial Circuit of Virginia from 1851 to 1869, he pronounced the death sentence for abolitionist John Brown, who was captured at Harpers Ferry after his unsuccessful attempt to raise an insurrection in 1859.
