Bold sharp cds on ca. 1856 legal size cover to Columbia, Mo., matching straight line "Paid" handstamp and "6" double rating; cover reduced at right refolded at other sides, Very Fine appearance, from 1853 until October 1857 the Mormons occupied this fort. As the Union Pacific Railroad was building track from Omaha City westwards, the Central Pacific Railroad was building track eastwards from Sacramento. The Pacific Union Express Co. had a close working relationship with the Central Pacific Railroad. Apparently, this letter was carried by Pacific Union Express to the Central Pacific Railroad, which carried it to the eastern railhead, and subsequently placed in the mails to Wisconsin. The linking of the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads would be May 10, 1869. The agreed place was Promontory, Utah Territory. The sender of this cover was probably with the advance construction team. Because Promontory was in the middle of the desert, there was no post office; the only possible marking was docketing as shown here. THE ONLY RECORDED COVER POSTMARKED ON THE DAY THE GOLDEN SPIKE WAS DRIVEN CONNECTING THE TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD, AND CARRIED EAST ON THE SPECIAL FIRST DAY TRAIN.
