Wells, Fargo & Co., Rye Patch, Nev. Magenta oval handstamp on 3¢ green entire to "White Plains, C.P.R.R., Nevada" with black company frank, flap & right side replaced, F.-V.F., thought to be the only known example of this rare Wells, Fargo & Co. marking. Estimate; $300 - 400.
With the discovery of gold in California in 1849, eager prospectors and immigrants established a well-traveled wagon trail following the Humboldt River. Some gold seekers eventually left the trail and explored nearby mountain ranges. This exploration led to a silver and gold boom in the 1860s. Towns such as Unionville, Rochester, Star City, Humboldt City and Rye Patch sprang from a sea of sagebrush. As the silver supply was depleted, the towns dried up.
Rye Patch, named for a patch of wild rye grass growing along the railroad, had a post office, school, boarding house and, after 1869, a station on the Central Pacific Railroad. Its mill processed $1,000,000 worth of gold and silver. The mill closed in 1877 and Rye Path was among the last towns to become a ghost town. Est. $300-400 (Image)

Treasure Hill is an east-jutting spur of the White Pine Range of White Pine County in the central eastern part of Nevada. Hamilton is situated at the northern base of the hill while Treasure City is situated on the hill, 2.5 miles from Hamilton. By early 1881 the mining activity had collapsed as the mining of the hill was dependent on the now depleted deposits. As a result, by 1888 there were only 24 people living there with the principal towns of Hamilton at the base of the hill, the Treasure City on the hill side and the Shermantown went into oblivion. Wylie & Co. operated an express in the Esmeralda District of Nevada during 1861. Based on the two surviving covers that were carried by Wylie, the letters from the Esmeralda District connected with the U.S. mail at Placerville and Wells, Fargo & Co. in Carson City. This indicates that the route from the Aurora area ran into both California and Nevada Territory. This cover was carried by Wylie to Wells, Fargo & Co. at Esmeralda. Wells, Fargo then placed it into the U.S. mails at Placerville Cal. for delivery to Bow, N.H. Est. $2,000-3,000 (Image)
