U.S. Army at Washington D.C., endorsed "On Public Service" and "New Mexico", carried by military courier back up the Sante Fe trail to Fort Leavenworth, delivered to a non-contract Missouri River steamboat leaving for St. Louis, struck with red St. Louis "STEAM 10" straightline rating due handstamp, "10" crossed out and manuscript "Free" rating since the Adjutant General had the franking privilege, receipt docketing of Sept. 24, 1847, two months 11 days after it was written, Very Fine and choice. A RARE SANTA FE N.M. MILITARY LETTER TO WASHINGTON D.C.
This letter was written by Captain William N. Grier, a member of the Doniphan's Expedition that seized Santa Fe at the beginning of the Mexican War. Letter reads: "It becomes my melancholy duty to report to you the death of 2d. Lieut. Joseph McElvain 1st Dragoons, who died at this place at 12½ O'Clock P.M. yesterday (July 12th) from the effects of a gunshot would in the left arm near the shoulder joint. On the morning of the 14th Inst. Lieut. M. & two other officers of my command with a Detachment of twenty Dragoons went in pursuit of a party of Marauding Indians (Navajos). About two miles from this place Lieut. M. was wounded as described above by the accidental discharge of a carbine which he held in his right hand, Very Respectfully, Wm. Brier". Established by Vermont men, Jared L. Sanderson and Bradley Barlow during the Civil War, the Barlow-Sanderson Overland Mail Company first carried the mail and operated a stage line between Sedalia and Warrensburg, Missouri and by 1863, was also operating a line from Kansas City, Missouri to Fort Scott, Kansas. In 1866, they began to expand westward and transferred their headquarters from Kansas City to Junction City, Colorado. By 1867, the two entrepreneurs had established a route from Missouri to California over the Santa Fe Trail and changed the name to the Barlow and Sanderson Company. The company continued to grow in Colorado, becoming the largest stage line in the area and in 1874, the headquarters moved to Granada, Colorado. Two years later, despite rumors of bribery and corruption within the company, the stage line continued to expand. However, by 1878, Bradley Barlow withdrew and the name of the company changed to J.L. Clear oval handstamp on cover bearing 3¢ dull red (26) tied by bold "Pacific City Ioa., Oct 30" to Denver City Kans., endorsed "Care of C.O.C. & P.P. Express, St. Joseph" at left; reduced at right and slightly cleaned, Fine and scarce use, with 1987 P.F. certificate. Estimate; $400 - 600.
This firm was a part of the western freighting operation of Russell, Majors & Waddell. t was a precursor of the Pony Express, later operated by the same firm from St. Joseph to California. The COC&PPE was running between St. Joseph and the gold mining regions of the Rocky Mountains in what is now Colorado, since there was no mail route. Todd & Bryan's Express. Wonderful clear strike of small shield handstamp and "Columbus" straightline handstamp on folded letter to Florida, Missouri, entered the mails with "San Francisco, 17 June / 40" large cds with integral rate in red and light strike of "Per Str. Columbus" straightline handstamp in matching red, letter (2-1/2 pages) is from a miner to his mother back home and datelined "Tuoloma (sic) County, State of California, June 2d A.D. 1850" even though California was not yet a state at the time, the writer describes Tuolumne County as a "wild barren mountainous country" and himself as "shut out as it were from all the social blessings of life, which is the fate of all who are in pursuit of the only desirable thing that this country abounds in (that is gold)…I have been doing very well during the last ten days, I have taken out of the dirt over three hundred dollars… I have taken out one piece in company with three others with whom I am now working that weighs 20 ounces the value of which is over 300 dollars and a variety of others weighing from 5 to 30 dollars," separation at the folds, corner and edge wear, a bit soiled, F.-V.F., a rare if not unique example of a ship endorsement applied by an express company, cover illustrated in Nathan's Franks of Western Expresses (page 208) and Coburn's Letters of Gold (page 150), ex-Drew. Estimate; $2,000 - 3,000.
This cover was carried on the first departure of the non-contract Law's Line SS Columbus from San Francisco on June 18, 1850. Endorsements were required for letters to be carried on non-contract ships, and Todd & Bryan's Express was clearly prepared. Todd & Bryan's Express was one of the first express companies to emerge during the California gold rush. They operated from the southern mines to Stockton and thence to San Francisco. This cover was sent a month before Bryan left the partnership and the company was renamed simply Todd & Co.'s Express. Est. $2,000-3,000 (Image)
