Large serifed cds in blue and purple manuscript "12½" rate marking applied in San Francisco on folded letter to Portland, Oregon, letter (1 page) is headed "Stockton Cal, Jany 1st 1851" and from a farmer "on a Rancho five miles from Stockton" to a friend, the writer seeks buckwheat seed in hopes of growing that crop along with barley, lightly soiled, Very Fine and interesting use, not rated by the Stockton postmaster presumably because he was unsure of the correct postage for a letter to Oregon.

Large serifed cds in blue and large oval "40" rate marking in matching blue (oval is faint) on folded letter to Chillicothe, Ohio, also manuscript "40" notation, letter (3 pages) is from a miner to his brother back home and datelined "Cannacker Gulch, Calaveras County California, Feb 15th 1851", letter reads in part "for 50 miles 'round me the miners are not averaging more than 4 dollars per day… on the Trinity River new and rich diggings are discovered… 350 or 400 miles from me… every ravine in California… is prospected or dug over, the ground is being dug 2 and 3 times over where it paid… the Indians steal all the mules, horses, oxen, etc. that they can… I think they will be driven out of the country this coming season", some separation at the folds, edge wear, a couple small stains, F.-V.F., ex-Knapp.

Manuscript postmark and manuscript "40" and "Pd" rate marking on folded letter to Oxford, Connecticut, letter (1 page) is written in verse from a man to a woman back home and datelined "California May 1, 1851", letter begins "There was quite a rush, To the Post Office last night, And I among the rest, Was happily blessed, With a letter, which gave real delight", minor edge wear, Very Fine.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

The "destruction of Stockton by fire" is referenced in the letter in the previous lot. That fire may be the reason why the Stockton postmaster resumed using manuscript postmarks for a short time in 1851.

Large cds with integral rate on folded letter to the postmaster at Pinckney, Michigan, also large "40" rate handstamp in blue likely applied in Pinckney, letter (1½ pages) with personal content is from a farmer to his wife, which is strange because she is not the addressee, letter is datelined "Lapon's Ranch Molino Co. California, May 24th 1850", which is also strange because there was never a Molino County in California and this letter is necessarily and 1851 use given the postmark type and rate, letter mentions "our crops look fair at present, what success we shall have in disposing of them is yet in the future, which depends upon the amount of emigration to this country", minor corner wear, Very Fine.

Manuscript postmark and manuscript "40" rate marking on folded letter to Dowagiac, Michigan, letter (2½ pages) is headed "Marysville July the 4th 1850" and from miner to his daughter back home, letter discusses family matters and ends with prices current, in between the writer reports he and another man "arrived the 22th day of August… we worked together in the first mines a little while and then… we went up the Sacramento about 250 miles… we made about 800 dollars through the winter… we located provisions up the river… we have 2 teams and 10 pack mules… the water being by the melting of the snow so that we cannot work in the mines much 'til August", small scrapes between the postmark and rate marking, a bit soiled, bleach spots, Fine and very early for this town, just five Marysville manuscript postmarks are recorded.

Manuscript postmark (same date as the previous lot) and manuscript "80" rate marking on folded letter to Monticello, Illinois, letter (3 pages) is from a miner to his brother back home and datelined "June the 5th 1850, Sierra Nevada N Fork of N Yuba", letter is about family plans and includes prices current, the writer also mentions "The water is too high for us to do much yet 'tho we have taken four thousand dollars out of the bank in the last two months, we have not worked hard either… there is six of us in partnership, two sailors Tom and Bill clever fellows… Tom can beat the gals at cooking, we live about as well as you do at home… excuse the scribbling, my seat is a stone my desk the same", small holes on the fold lines and a bit soiled, Fine and rare, the only recorded Marysville manuscript postmark showing the 80¢ double rate.

None makes over 8 dollars per day on average. Many less. image (1849 California Constitution at Monterey) 1849 (Sep.) "San Joaquin Dist., Tuolumne River, Election Returns". Docketing on gray folded cover addressed to Hon. B Riley Governor, Monterey, Upper California, privately carried, marked "Rec'd Sept 3d 1849"; minor fold toning, Fine and rare early use.
Estimate; $400 - 600.

The state was divided into 10 districts - San Diego, Santa Barbara, San Louis Obispo, Los Angeles, Sonoma, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Monterey, San Jose and San Francisco to send delegates to the California Constitutional Convention at Monterey (Sept. 1 to Oct. 13, 1849). General Bennett Riley was Military Governor of California from April 13, 1849 to December 20, 1849. The convention met at Monterey on Sept. 1, 1849 and by Oct. 12th, had formed a State Constitution providing for an American Civil Governor. A month later, the people ratified it and on Dec. 20th Riley yielded his authority to Peter M. Burnett, ending a period of 3½ years of Military Government in California.
