A UNIQUE USAGE OF A PASSENGER PACKET ADVERTISING COVER MODIFIED DURING ITS CONFEDERATE NAVAL PERIOD BY THE COMMANDER OF THE "RED ROVER".

The "Red Rover" was a side-wheel steamer built in 1859 and purchased by the Confederacy in November of 1861. Initially, she was put her to use as a barracks ship for the floating battery at New Orleans. Later, she served in defending Columbus, Ky. where this cover was mailed. In March of 1862, at Island No. 10 near New Madrid, Missouri, she was holed by Union fire during a bombardment of that island, leading the Confederates to abandon her as a barracks ship.
