A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE "STEAMER 5" ROUTE AGENT HANDSTAMP USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE PROVIDENCE "STEAM" STRAIGHTLINE.
Late in 1846, a collision forced the "Oregon" out of service. While being repaired, the route agent removed "Oregon" from the "Steamer Oregon, 5" oval handstamp. This handstamp now read "Steamer 5" was used on the replacement vessel as well as the "Oregon" when she returned to service in mid-1847.
