Rare Group of 1980 Iran Hostage Crisis Items, the first cover is franked 39¢ tied by Montréal roller cancel on cover paying 39¢ 2-4oz printed paper rate to Iran. Service Temporarily Suspended (bilingual) and returned to sender. This cover never arrived in Iran as it was during the hostage crisis. The other 13 covers are before, during and after the crisis, also all mailed from Montréal to Iran (and were delivered). On the day the hostages were seized, six American diplomats evaded capture and remained in hiding at the home of the Canadian diplomat John Sheardown, under the protection of the Canadian ambassador Ken Taylor. In late 1979, the government of Prime Minister Joe Clark secretly issued an Order in Council allowing Canadian passports to be issued to some American citizens so that they could escape. In cooperation with the CIA, which used the cover story of a film project, two CIA agents and the six American diplomats boarded a Swiss Air flight to Zurich, Switzerland, on January 28, 1980.
