image New Zealand Extensive Great Barrier Island to Auckland Pigeon Post Collection of Stamps and Documents, including most of the stamps and forms from both the Pigeongram Service and the Pigeongram Agency, as well as interesting collateral material. The collection starts with a cover recovered from the wreck of the «Wairarapa» at Great Barrier Island on Oct. 29, 1894. In the absence of any means of communication, save for the weekly boat, news of this disaster could only be communicated to Auckland a week after its occurrence. The Pigeon Post was organized to overcome this deficiency. The collection illustrates the various stamps and forms used by the two concurrent organizations: The Original Great Barrier Pigeongram Service and the Great Barrier Pigeongram Agency. The collection includes complete sheets of Auckland City Stamp Catalogue (ACS) numbers VP-1 (18 stamps), the Blue Special Post stamp, the green Special Post stamp VP-2 (24 stamps) and the Red Marotiri VP-6 (6 stamps), as well as a reconstructed sheet of the blue Triangular 6d stamp VP-7 (20 stamps). Numerous mint and used copies of stamps, some on pieces of flimsies, are also present, including one very rare «Marotiri / Pigeongram» overprint of which only 240 were printed (ACS VP-5, CV NZ$7,500). The collection also includes two flown Service flimsies, one with a VF copy of VP-4 attached and a complete unused Service flimsy Walker type 4a as well as a hand printed header for a type 5 flimsy. Agency flimsies are represented by two copies of type 5, one with a 6d. stamp and the other with a 1/- stamp, two copies of flimsy type 6a with 6d stamps and one copy of flimsy type 6c with one 6d stamp. Unused Agency flimsies types 3 and 9 are also present without stamps. Other collateral material includes a used Agency forwarding envelope; a very elaborate 1901 Service Christmas card, anniversary commemorative covers from 1938, 1948, 1958 and 1978 and a copy of the basic reference book on the subject: J. Reg. Walker New Zealand The Great Barrier Island 1898-99 Pigeon Post Stamps (The Collector's Club N.Y., N.Y.). Most album pages have side notes noting prices paid at major auction houses in the mid-1960s. A rare opportunity to acquire an extensive NZ Pigeon Post collection. Overall very fine, some faults to be expected. See also our stamp section for 8 more lots from this collection. (Image)

image New Zealand Mint Collection and Accumulation, in two albums, two 48-page stockbooks, a dozen manilla sheets, 7 collector packs, 4 prestige booklets and the magnificent 2005 NZ Post album for NZ Stamps 150 years. The albums cover the period 1953 to 1995 and are about 80% complete with the earlier period being more complete than the later. However this collection is greatly enhanced by the stockbooks content. One stockbook hold stamps from the 1920s to about 2011, thus including much of the material absent from the albums. We saw items such as the early Health issues including the Smiling Boy set, the 1920 Victory set, the 1925 Exhibition Buildings 4d stamp, and George V in Admiral’s uniform. The second stockbook only holds souvenir sheets from about 1953 on, both from Health and regular issues. Both stockbooks have been filled in a very haphazard fashion, sorting them properly will reveal the true extent of the collection. Postal fiscals, Life Insurance and Ross Dependency stamps are scattered through the lot. Both stamps and souvenir sheets from recent issues provide for a large face value which we did not attempt to evaluate. Very fine throughout. (Image)

image New Zealand Mint and Used Collection to about 2007, in two stockbooks. Starts with Scott #51 as the Chalon Heads are offered separately. A very advanced and near complete collection in period, including many varieties such as minor Scott numbers. Scott number on small paper strips identifies each stamp. About 50% of the decimal era is mint making for huge face value. The semi-postals are equally advanced and almost complete to 2007 with miniature sheets present from Scott #54 on. Other back of the book categories such as postal-fiscals, Life Insurance, officials and postage due are also well represented. Faults noted on some early material, else overall fine or better. image New Zealand Mint and Used Collection, from 1882 to 2000, many in mounts on quadrille pages, housed in 2 binders and 5 stockbooks. Period is well represented with the mostly used in the earlier issues, then gradually becoming mint from the 1940s, and mostly mint never hinged from the 1960s onwards. We noted many miniature sheets from the Health issues throughout the collection, with also some of its related first day covers, many high value denominations in the modern issues, some back of the book such as officials and airmails. Also included are a few stamps from Tokelau, Niue and worldwide including some Republic of China, housed in one stockbook and one binder. Clean collection, overall very fine. (Image)
